The blades are the soul of every meat grinder. They have to be in a proper state to deliver excellent results. If you want your meat grinder to provide you with high-quality ground meat, you have to take care of the blades and sharpen them whenever required.
Sharpening the blades is one of the most important tasks for any meat grinder owner. It is even better if you can perform this task at home as this will give you the satisfaction of using your tools and equipment. Otherwise, there is always the concern of unhygienic equipment being used in the store.
First, you should have your sharpening tool ready to use. Place a sheet of glass on a flat surface, which will act as the perfect platform for sharpening meat grinder blades. Use a wet cloth to wipe the glass, making sure it is just moist and not soaking wet. You should also cut a piece of 120 grit sandpaper (same size as the glass) and place it on your platform. The water will help adjust and fix the sandpaper in place.
Work with the Blades
The second step involves removing the blades from the machine with proper tools and instructions. Then, use a wet cloth to wipe any dust particles. Some blades have numbers carved on them, but if this is not the case for you, make sure you keep them in a particular order so that it is easy to place them back.
The Main Task: Sharpening
It is advisable to wear gloves for protecting your hands from the sharp tools and for a stronger grip. It would also be a good idea to test the blades on any paper-like material to check its performance. You can also cut a piece of sandpaper in a circle (or in an 8 figure) to check its direction.
Go through this procedure a couple of times as this will ensure that you sharpen the blades in a systematic order. After that, wipe away the particles on the blade again.
Now, take off the 120 grit sandpaper sheet and place a 600 grit one. You have to repeat the first step of placing the sandpaper once again. Run the blades again in a circle (or in an 8 figure) and repeat this process four times. Even though you have gone through a similar process, this final step makes sure the sharpened blade has an even finish.
After this, soak the blades in warm water, clean them thoroughly and leave them to dry. After they have dried, carefully install them back in the machine. Again, make sure you are wearing your gloves. The numbering of the blades will guide you in setting them properly.
You should always remember to take good care of your meat grinder blades. If you do not sharpen them often, the meat’s texture won’t be the way you want it. The entire procedure explained above is not too difficult, but you must be careful and extremely vigilant throughout.
